May 07, 2025 09:36AM ● By Soroptimist International of Dixon News ReleaseDIXON, CA (MPG) - Ruby Guzman, a senior at Dixon High School, spends countless hours giving back to others. She dedicates her time to volunteering in schools with the goal of making a positive difference in the lives of students. Her volunteer efforts include working at preschools within the Woodland Unified School District and at Dixon High School.
At the preschools, she participates in various activities, such as running information booths to encourage families to enroll their children in preschool programs for storage. Her focus is on events that attract families, and she enjoys working closely with children aged 3 to 4. Guzman has had the chance to visit different classrooms, which has given her valuable insights into the daily routines of preschool teachers, helping her enhance her skills for greater effectiveness. Whether it’s moving boxes, organizing file and storage areas, cutting and filing papers, or collaborating with teachers and students, she is committed to providing support wherever it’s needed.
Although Guzman currently focuses on preschool children, she has previously volunteered as a tutor at Dixon High School. During the 2023-2024 school year, she faced her own challenges while preparing for finals and wanted to assist other students. She realized she was not the only one who needed help, so she began offering to help tutor others.
“I get the opportunity to benefit other students and help them feel better about themselves in an academic setting,” said Guzman when asked about her motivation for tutoring.
Her initial goal of seeking help for herself has transformed into a passion for helping others. This award recognizes Ruby, who will receive $750, along with a $250 donation made in her name to the Woodland Unified School District Preschool.
Soroptimist International Violet Richardson Award honors young women between the ages of 14 and 18 for volunteer action, such as fighting drugs, crime and violence, cleaning up the environment, and working to end discrimination and poverty.
