Sewer Rate Hike Protest Fills Council Chambers

by Dave Scholl 25 days ago, Categories:   Business, City+School, Local Life

Thumb_2226-front-page---crowd-at-council The Dixon City Council chamber was packed almost to capacity this past Tuesday, as about 90 Dixon residents attended to protest the recent doubling of Sewer Fees and the council’s refusal to allow the issue to go on the ballot in the November General Election. The protest rally caught members of the council by surprise, as Mayor Batchelor and Council members Steve Bird and Jerry Casteñon snuck by the crowd and into the chambers - where the doors were closed until shortly before the meeting was to begin. Vice-Mayor Thom Bogue, however, joined the crowd and encouraged their participation. The rally continued to grow in size both outside the chambers, and once inside. An obviously nervous mayor Batchelor - whose voice was quivering and body language should discomfort and annoyance - announced at the beginning of the Public Comments of Items Not on the Agenda, that speakers would be limited to a maximum of five minutes. Two Crude Oil Trains a Day May Pass Through Dixon

by Dave Scholl about 1 month ago, Categories:   Business, City+School, Local Life

Thumb_news-flash-oval-with-newspaper-and-inside-white-box Sacramento – The California State Senate this week passed Senate Joint Resolution 27 authored by Senator Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima), which calls on the federal government to take legislative and regulatory action to protect California communities from the threat of train accidents involving transportation of crude oil. Dixon is on the mainline of the Union Pacific, which will likely be a route for transporting much of the oil. Plans are to eventually run two trains with 90 oil tanker cars through Dixon every day. Mayor Jack Batchelor is promoting a "Century 21 Priority Development Area" to locate "affordable" multi-family housing on land adjacent to that Union Pacific mainline - which could create a high risk in case of derailment or oil spill. Currently there is only one residence within 200 feet of the mainline, and few commercial buildings as well. Read More

Proven Microbiological System Could Solve Dixon Sewer Issue & Save Millions

by Dave Scholl 4 months ago, Categories:   Business, City+School, Local Life

Thumb_2214-in-pipe-sewer-plant City Staff Hide Option from Council Since 2010 Proven Microbiological System Could Solve Dixon Sewer Issue & Save Millions. "Green" Tech Firm Interest in Dixon as Demonstration Project A proven advanced waste water treatment technique using microbiology could resolve Dixon’s sewer issues within months, and at a cost of less than one-dollar per month per hook-up. That is in contrast to a $30 million “activated sludge” project that can’t be on line until late 2015, and will double sewer fees to every Dixon home. In fact, the advanced system could have been in operation over three years ago if local officials hadn’t ignored the information and hid it from the City Council when it was first provided to the staff in 2010 Read More
