Dixon Public Library urges families to participate in this year’s summer reading program
“Fizz, Boom, READ!”
The Dixon Public Library will launch its “Fizz, Boom, READ!” summer reading program on June 9, 2014.
This program is open to everyone. There is a program for preschoolers, children through young adult, and adults with programs, prize drawings, storytimes and more. Families with children who are not yet reading themselves are invited to join the Early Literacy portion of the program.
The library is hosting eight weeks of free activities for children and adults that encourage and support a love of reading. Participants will also receive prizes for making progress towards reaching their reading goals.
“We’ve got great programs planned to make reading fun,” said Catherine Wesenfeld, Adult Services Librarian. “Adults will participate in a weekly drawing for science-themed books and prizes.”
Events for children include Dale Lorzo Magic Show and Mad Science of Sacramento Valley. Children who reach their reading goal are invited to a Final Party in Women’s Improvement Club Park where they will get their final prize: a free book!
Summer Reading at the library is tons of fun, but it also keeps children’s brains sharp. Studies have shown that by the end of fifth grade, students who do not read during the summer are behind their peers by two years on average. “Students who read at least 5 books over the summer will retain their reading skills” Adrienne Gass, Youth Services Librarian, reminds us.
Online Registration will open June 5th through the library’s website, www.dixonlibrary.com and registration materials will be available for pick-up starting Monday, June 9th at 11am. To learn more about this summer’s adventure at the library, please visit www.dixonlibrary.com or call 707-678-5447.
