Kiger's Comments by Wanda Kiger May 4, 2005 Bill Introduced to Allow Condom Distribution in PrisonCan you believe this one? First of all, sex among inmates is illegal. That’s one of the privileges that you lost when you break the law and go to jail. However, proponents and author of this proposed legislation, Paul Koretz, claimed that studies indicate homosexual activity goes on in 30-60 percent of the inmates and HIV infection is five times greater in prison than the general population. They claim the intent of the bill is to reduce the spread of HIV and AIDS in prisons through unprotected sex, and their answer to this problem is providing condoms and dental dams. Opponents of AB 1677 and Traditional Values Coalition argue that this bill would encourage and condone sexual activity, which is illegal behind prison walls. He said that giving condoms is to prisoners is like giving clean needles to prison inmates who are injecting illegal drugs. I would also compare it to handing out free condoms to minors to encourage sexual activity. The bill states: “The distribution of those devices shall not be considered a crime nor shall it be deemed to encourage sexual acts between inmates.” This quote from someone in an article reported in the Sacramento Bee February 26th kind of says it all: “Houses cost too much, our freeways are overcrowded, we’re running out of water, we’re running out of electricity, our budget is out of balance, and we’re worried about condoms in prison.” U.S. House of Representatives Passes Parental Notification BillThis bill requires girls under 18 to notify their parents before traveling to another state for an abortion. Cancer Vaccine DevelopedThere has been a vaccine recently developed for a virus that it linked to cervical cancer. This is likely to be a useful tool against this killer disease. Abortion Group Targets Black Churches The “Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice”, (RCRC) has recently launched a “Black Church Initiative” to encourage black pastors to become involved in supporting abortion on demand. Oregon Upholds State’s Marriage LawsThe Oregon Supreme Court recently upheld the state’s marriage laws and invalidated 3,000 marriage licenses issued to same sex couples in Multomah County last year. I’ll leave you with a couple common sense rules for life: Never buy and own more than you have time to upkeep and polish, and be nice to nerds because chances are that some day you will end up working for one.
