DIXON, CA (MPG) - In the last week, almost a dozen wood stalls decorated with screaming colors were set up around town for the annual fireworks sales and on Sunday, they turned into small parades of customers. And, thanks to a city that opted to use a lottery system to select non-profits to host those sites, several Dixon civic clubs and groups can fundraise thousands of dollars for their missions.

It's also an opportunity to get club members more involved.

It does, however, take a lot of organizing a roster of volunteers if one doesn’t have a bunch of retirees available as the stands are open all day until nightfall.

“Everybody knows what to do so it makes it easier,” said Leah Marlin of the Women’s Auxiliary for American Legion Post 208. “It usually takes about 25 volunteers for one booth.” Marlin has been involved since the beginning and was seen assisting the Grillin’ & Chillin’ and Toys for Tots booth in front of CVS while Dixon Fire Department Captain John Malone was out busy checking to ensure all specifications for safety were completed.

At the Safeway booth, the Veteran Riders were all set up and ready for business on opening day last Sunday, acting more like a guy’s poker game get-together with jabs and fun than a significant fundraiser.

Veteran Riders Rusty Shackleford, Brian Roberts, Scott Spinelli, and John Mackenzie proudly showed off their matching shirts and vests. That’s the trick in the heat, they say. Have fun and laugh with your friends and the next thing you know, the 4th of July is here.
