Statement on Eviction Moratorium Extension and Rent Relief Compensation for Landlords

Jun 25, 2021 12:00AM ● By Office of California Senator Bill Dodd News Release

By extending the eviction moratorium and increasing state rent relief compensation to landlords, we can give a critical lifeline to struggling Californians

SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) – Senator Bill Dodd (D-Napa) made the following statement on today's announcement by legislative leaders and Governor Newsom of a proposed extension of California’s statewide evictions moratorium, and an increase in compensation for California’s rent relief program:

"The pandemic has been devastating for so many tenants and small landlords, and this agreement is an important step toward recovery. By extending the eviction moratorium and increasing state rent relief compensation to landlords, we can give a critical lifeline to struggling Californians. This framework also streamlines the application process to speed relief to renters and landlords, which is an essential component. The investment of over $5 billion in federal funds and adoption of eviction protections will enable families regain their footing and help us move forward."

An agreement between Senate President pro Tem Toni Atkins, Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and Governor Newsom was announced Friday on AB 832. The three-party agreement would extend the current eviction moratorium through September 30, 2021, and ensure that California quickly uses over $5 billion in federal rental assistance to help the state’s tenants and landlords, protecting vulnerable households from eviction. The agreement expands rental assistance by enhancing current law. Provisions include increasing reimbursement to 100 percent for both rent that is past due and prospective payments for both tenants and landlords. Additionally, the bill ensures rental assistance dollars stay in California by prioritizing cities and counties with unmet needs, and uses the judicial process to ensure tenants and landlords have attempted to obtain rental assistance.

Details on the proposed extension can be found in AB 832, which was amended today.
