DIXON, CA (MPG) – The Dixon High School varsity football team won on the road 28-21 at Union Mine in El Dorado on Friday, scoring a touchdown in each quarter.
Wes Besseghini is now in his 12th season as Dixon's head coach. The DHS grad and former football player first coached high school football for Azusa High in 2006. Next, he started co-coaching girls softball with his wife, Jessi, at Dixon High. Then in 2007, he became the Rams’ junior varsity head coach. In 2009, he became the varsity defensive coordinator which led to him becoming head coach in 2011.
According to the seasoned coach, he "leaned into it."
Back to present day, JV didn't do as well Friday night, losing 0-38. However, JV head coach Rick Tully knows his players fought earnestly, nonetheless.
"They played hard against Union Mine," Tully said. "They learned a lot in their first game and are looking forward to playing Winters on Friday."
Tully enjoyed football in high school in Eureka and started coaching girls softball when he got to Dixon, but soon was asked to help coach the football team. Now, it's been nearly 10 years, and he is as dedicated to the job as anyone can be. He is out there - even in the heat - two and a half hours a day for football practice Monday through Thursday and then whatever it takes for the Friday game.
"I appreciate getting the opportunity to get these boys to become young men. It's not just football, they learn the basics of growing up like how to be respectful and be a good person in the community," he said.
Tully works just as hard as the Vice President of the Tully Consulting Group, an engineering service company based in Dixon that was founded by his wife, Robin. The couple has two grown children.
This week, the team doesn't have to go anywhere except out to Finney Field at DHS. Hopefully, the field is cleared of a gopher infestation that ran rampant over summer break.
"They're ready for it. The whole team is working hard, and they are a strong team," Tully said. "A couple stand outs are Russell Crane who has been working hard in the weight room and is a strong team leader. Colton Shipley is great, and Max Graef, who just transferred here from out of the area, is a very hardworking player. He never gives up. We had a pushup contest, and he did 66 pushups in a row.”
Games start with JV at 5 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m. All tickets for home sporting events are now digital and must be purchased on GoFan. There is an app, or you can use the website. Please purchase your game tickets in advance.
Visit the snack bar when you come to a game as it supports the “Quarterback Club.” The “QB Club” pays for most of the football team's needs, and the snack bar is how they generate revenue. Pizza, hotdogs, chips and sodas are offered on the usual menu.
