DIXON, CA (MPG) - Several students of Dixon’s Ramtown Karate will be jet-setting, well okay, Southwest-ing, to Las Vegas to compete in the U.S.A. Karate Open in Las Vegas this weekend.
Kiera MacKenzie will be competing in Plus 68 Kilogram Elite women Kumite, one of three main sections of karate training that in Japanese means “grappling hands” or what Americans might deem as sparring. For MacKenzie, the time is bittersweet. She has been on the USA National Team for two years and is now retiring.
“She’s fought all over the world and this is her final fight,” said Jim Ernest, Sensei and Ramtown Karate owner. “She’ll stay involved but not in a competitive level.”
Also competing will be Angela Vega in 12-year-old Girls Intermediate Kata and Kumite; Christopher Vega in 9-year-old Boys Novice Kata and Kumite; Anna Anderson in 15-year-old Girls Intermediate in Kata and Kumite; and Thomas Sanchez 13-year old Boys Intermediate in Kata and Kumite.
“It’s a real experience for these kids and the one place in the United States where they can compete with kids from all over the world – 50 countries,” said Ernest. “It’s a real international experience and the top athlete of the world will be there.” For more information, call (707) 678-4899.
