DIXON, CA (MPG) - Coming home is comfort for a citizen; coming home for a police officer is success.

The notable quote on the law enforcement career stresses the courage of a blue-blooded police officer, which Dixon Police Chief Robert Thompson seeks out here through the Cadet Program.

“It is a valuable initiative designed specifically for local Dixon youth who are interested in law enforcement,” Thompson said. “It provides them with firsthand experience, training, and mentorship from seasoned officers.”

Dixon public information officer Madeline Graf said the Dixon Police Department's Cadet Program is a great volunteer opportunity for young adults looking to kickstart a rewarding career and make a difference in their community.

“Police cadets get hands-on experience in different areas of law enforcement while picking up essential skills like teamwork, leadership, and service,” Graf said.

Dixon residents between the ages of 15 and 20 should be in good physical and mental condition, have a clear police record, and maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average in high school or college to join. Once approved, a cadet volunteers at least eight hours a month in and out of the patrol car.

“This program plays a crucial role in building future community leaders by fostering discipline, responsibility and a strong sense of public service,” Thompson said.

Graf detailed the in-field training cadets receive.

“By joining the cadet program, participants immerse themselves in a learning environment that nurtures both personal and professional growth,” Graf said. “The program offers a blend of classroom training, ride-alongs with seasoned officers, community policing activities and exposure to various law enforcement careers.”

According to Graf, being an officer is much more than taking emergency calls. Veteran officers help cadets develop important cadet skills, including traffic control, attending meetings and delivering witness subpoenas.

Additionally, cadets conduct report-taking and assist various bureaus within the department, including directing phone calls to the appropriate personnel. This helps cadets “interact with the community during all kinds of problem-solving situations,” according to Graf.

Through the Cadet Program, Thompson said, “we not only educate our local youth about law enforcement but also strengthen the relationship between the police department and the community, ensuring a safer and more connected Dixon.”

In the end, Graf said the program provides a way for area youth to give back even if cadets do not choose a law enforcement career after attending.

“Whether you want to consider a career in public safety or want to learn leadership and the value of community service, this program is a path towards realizing those ambitions,” Graf said.

“Take the initiative towards a rewarding and impactful opportunity by applying for the Police Cadet Program at the Dixon Police Department.”
