FAIRFIELD, CA (MPG) - Solano College Theatre (SCT) will present its fall play, “The Visit,” directed by adjunct faculty member JanLee Marshall from Nov. 8 to Nov. 24.
“I love a tragicomedy, and this show is as relevant today as it was when it was written in 1956,” said Marshall. “In a world that often feels like it is ruled by money, this play poses the question, ‘Can justice be bought?’ and makes us consider our own choices regarding needs versus wants and our love of things.”
“The Visit” is a piercing tragicomedy that details a scorned woman’s journey to justice. In this haunting and blistering play, the wealthy Claire Zachanassian offers financial help to her struggling hometown in exchange for the life of a man who wronged her years before.
“While many are not familiar with this show, set in 1958 in a European village, Gullen could be any small town, anywhere, in any year,” said Marshall. “There is something in it for everyone. It includes romance, power, poverty, greed, commercialism, betrayal, capitalism, honesty and murder. What more could you ask for?”
Jailynn Bermudez, a student at Solano Community College and player on the volleyball and swimming teams, performs as Claire Zachanassian. Jae Tolbert plays opposite her as Alfred Ill, the man attributed with ruining Claire’s life. Tolbert recently performed as Lord Evelyn Oakley in “Anything Goes” at Solano College Theatre. Among the 29 students performing in this production are a student and parent, high school students, and Officer Derrick Roberts, who works on campus in the Department of Public Safety.
“The Visit” is directed by Marshall, alongside assistant director Tori Thompson. The design team includes Taśa Gleason (costume design), Malcolm Rodgers (set design), Andrea Stratton (lighting design) and Solano Community College student Jordan Ledbetter (sound design), who is also performing in the show as the butler.
The show runs Nov. 8 through Nov. 24, with Friday and Saturday shows at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. There will also be a Thursday night show at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 21. The Friday, Nov. 22 performance will be ASL Interpreted. Solano College Theatre is ADA accessible and can provide audio listening devices upon request.
