FAIRFIELD, CA (MPG) - Solano College Music will present a free year-end concert, “Music from the Movies,” at 7 p.m. May 13.

Directed by Solano Community College (SCC) Chamber Choir director Michael Reilly and Solano Community College Chamber Orchestra director Dr. Teri Yumae, the concert will be at the Solano Community College Performing Arts Center, 4000 Suisun Valley Road, Building 1200, Fairfield.

Reilly and Yumae have chosen several musical selections from fan-favorite blockbuster movies, including “Wicked,” “Howl’s Moving Castle,” “Disney’s Fantasia,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” and “Frozen.”

“Star Wars” lovers will enjoy the tenor and the bass quartet’s rendition of “John Williams is the Man,” a joyfully comedic song based on iconic compositions by John Williams.

Alexssia Macalpin, a music major who plans to transfer to California State University at Fullerton, is excited to continue her education in singing and guitar after starting choir at Will C. Wood High School in Vacaville.

“A lot of these songs are well-known, so you’ll recognize them,” said Macalpin. “I like the style of teaching at SCC, it’s like, we’re gonna do it and then ask questions after. We’ve been working really hard this semester and the songs are turning out pretty great. Everyone should come and watch.”

Juan Jimenez Lopez has been performing since elementary school when he started playing the violin. He now plays the double bass, an imposing upright string instrument that stands more than six feet tall.

“I’m most excited to play ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ because the music is nostalgic to me, reminiscent of when the movie came out,” said Lopez. “Plus it’s some of the most iconic movie music out there.”

Despite years of practice, though, stage fright is always a possibility.

“I do get stage fright but once I start playing with the orchestra, my focus is on the music and the conductor,” said Lopez. “Everything else goes away.”

“Music from the Movies” is a family-friendly concert. Guests can enjoy free movie treats such as popcorn and red licorice before the show and are encouraged to bring their singing voices to join in for a couple of songs (lyrics will be provided at the event).

The Solano Community College Performing Arts Center is an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act)-accessible venue. For more information, visit www.solanocollegetheatre.org or call 707-864-7100.

Concert admission is free and a parking pass is $3.
