DIXON, CA (MPG) - Abby Landeros, a 13-year-old from Dixon, has earned Season Champion status for the 2025 Jiu Jitsu World League season, marking a significant achievement in her competitive career less than two years after she began training.

Landeros, a seventh grader at John Knight Middle School and yellow belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), was named Season Champion after finishing the year in the top 2 percent of competitors in her age, weight and belt division. The designation reflects consistent performance across the 2025 season, including points earned, victories and submissions.

In September, Landeros reached the No. 1 national ranking in her division. She secured her championship standing following competition in Stockton Nov. 22, where she won her match, and again on Dec. 6 in San Diego, where she earned a victory, a submission and sufficient points to confirm her title on a global level.

“I felt very excited, emotional, and just wanted to thank God for giving me the opportunity to be the champion,” said Landeros after learning she had earned Season Champion status.

As part of the recognition, Landeros will receive a trophy, an additional championship belt and an update to her official online competitor profile acknowledging her Season Champion title.

Outside of jiu-jitsu, Landeros maintains a demanding schedule. She participates in wrestling and flag football and was recently honored at school as a top student athlete.

“I do wrestling, and after wrestling I do jujitsu,” said Landeros. “When I come home, I shower, do homework and just focus on that the rest of the day.”

According to Landeros, competition allows her to measure her progress while staying focused on effort rather than outcome.

“I like seeing how other people compete and just going out there and having fun,” said Landeros. “I never give up on the mat. I try my best, and I do it for my country, my grandma, my family and everyone who has supported me throughout my journey. I also do it for Dixon.”

Her father, Luis Landeros, said the accomplishment is notable given her experience level.

“She may be the first girl in the history of Dixon with only two years of jiu-jitsu becoming a world league champion,” said Luis Landeros. “She works really hard, but I want her to be a kid too. She’s going to be a model for a lot of kids growing up here.”

Landeros said she has faced moments of doubt but credits persistence and family support for helping her continue.

Landeros said, “I felt I was losing my strength, but I decided I had to keep going for my parents and myself.”

Looking ahead, Landeros plans to compete Jan. 31 at Stockton Arena and Feb. 22 in Long Beach. Her long-term goal is to remain Season Champion throughout 2026.

“For 2026, I’m going to come back stronger than ever,” said Landeros.
