January Marks Start of Winter Sports Action

DIXON, CA (MPG) - Winter sports activity in Dixon will pick up in early 2026 with a full schedule of high school competitions and community programs beginning in January.
Dixon High School boys soccer opens league play on Jan. 5 with an away match against Casa Roble High School. Varsity and junior varsity teams are scheduled to play at 4 p.m. at Casa Roble High School, 9151 Oak Ave. in Orangevale.
The varsity team continues its road schedule Jan. 7 with a 6 p.m. match against Destiny Christian Academy at 3401 Mayhew Road in Sacramento. Dixon returns home Jan. 12 to face Rio Linda High School at 4 p.m. before traveling to Sutter Union High School for a 3 p.m. match against the Sutter High Huskies on Jan. 14. The game will be played at 2665 Acacia Ave. in Sutter.
Dixon High School basketball teams also begin league play during the first week of January. The boys varsity basketball team will host Rio Linda at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 5, followed by a home game against Woodland at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 7. The Rams’ first road contest of 2026 is scheduled for Jan. 9 at Natomas High School, where they will face the Nighthawks at 3301 Fong Ranch Road in Sacramento.
The girls varsity basketball team mirrors that schedule, opening with a 7 p.m. home game against Rio Linda on Jan. 5 and hosting Woodland at 7 p.m. Jan. 7. The team’s first away game is set for 7 p.m. Jan. 9 at Natomas High School.
Wrestling competition begins with Dixon High School hosting the Morey Memorial Wrestling Tournament at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 10. The event will include coed varsity and junior varsity teams. Coed varsity wrestling is scheduled to compete at El Camino High School at 6 p.m. Jan. 20. Boys varsity wrestlers will travel to Destiny Christian Academy for a 6 p.m. match on Jan. 27.

Community sports programs are also preparing for winter and early spring seasons. The Solano-Yolo Rugby Club will begin regular practices in January under the leadership of Club President Kelley Evans and Head Coach Rick Flynn. Youth players in the U10, U12 and middle school divisions began practicing Dec. 9 and continue to meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Hall Park. High school players will start practices Jan. 6, following the same schedule and location. Practices will be held rain or shine.

Players are encouraged to bring cleats suitable for rugby or soccer, a mandatory mouthpiece, water and weather-appropriate clothing.
Youth rugby games will take place at multi-team sites beginning Jan. 3, with additional dates scheduled through March 7. A kickoff tournament is planned for Jan. 24 in Rio Linda, and the end-of-year tournament is set for March 7. High school preseason matches begin Jan. 24, followed by league play starting March 7. The season concludes with playoffs on May 5 and a championship on May 9. Details are available at soloyouthrugby.com.
