DIXON, CA (MPG) – Dixon Family Services hosted a two-day indoor rummage sale Feb. 6 and 7 at the back of its building, 155 N. Second St., raising funds to support its programs serving individuals and families in the Dixon community.

The sale ran from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days and was open to the public. The event was cash-only, and shoppers were asked to bring their own bags. Proceeds from the rummage sale will go directly toward Dixon Family Services’ programs.

According to Executive Director Cookie Powell, the sale featured a wide assortment of donated items, reflecting contributions from staff and board members.

“We have a little bit of everything,” said Powell. “Quite a bit of Easter, Christmas, some Fourth of July. Household stuff, man stuff, etc.”

According to Powell, the idea for the rummage sale originated with a board member who offered items from her garage to raise money for the organization. Additional items came from Powell’s own home.

“One of our board members cleaned out her garage and asked if we’d want to have a rummage sale with her items to make money for DFS,” said Powell. “I also had a lot of stuff from my house that we added to the sale.”

While the rummage sale is a relatively small fundraiser, Powell said it provides another opportunity for community members to support the organization.

“It is one small way that we and other people can have a ‘fundraiser’ for DFS,” said Powell.

The sale was designed to be accessible to a wide range of shoppers, with a variety of items and bargain pricing. Powell said rummage sales traditionally attract people looking for affordable essentials or unexpected finds.

“Shoppers do not usually have fundraising goals,” said Powell. “They shop at rummage sales and yard sales in search of bargain prices for the essentials, and to find treasures they didn’t even know that they wanted.”

A limited number of staff and board members were involved in organizing and running the event. According to Powell, two staff members and a board member helped set up the sale earlier in the week, and she and Board President Patty Richards staffed the sale during operating hours.

Beyond fundraising, Powell said she hopes shoppers leave the event knowing their purchases will make a difference locally.

“They can feel good about the fact that the money they spent will go directly to programs and services that will help people struggling in Dixon,” said Powell.

In addition to the rummage sale, Dixon Family Services used the event to promote an upcoming fundraiser. Comedy Night is scheduled for Aug. 8 at The Olde Vet’s Hall, 231 N. First St.

According to Powell, the event will offer multiple ways for community members to participate, including sponsorships, prize donations and ticket purchases.

“People who can afford to assist can do so as sponsors, prize donors and everyone who comes is helping the cause with the tickets they purchase,” said Powell. “I suggest that people who want to be at Comedy Night consider getting their tickets right away because we do expect it to sell out.”

“Many wonderful caring members of our community do this, and we always welcome new donors to our Team DFS,” said Powell.
