DIXON, CA (MPG) – Soroptimist International of Dixon had the honor of hosting Keetra Welling, program manager of Change and New Beginnings (CANB), who spoke to the club about the organization. Alongside the various services offered by CANB, the club appreciated Keetra’s enthusiasm and her positive, can-do attitude towards her work.

According to the Change and New Beginnings website, canbsolano.org, “Too many people in crisis are unable to access emergency shelter when they need it most.”

In 2009, they received two VA grants: one for buying housing and another for managing it in collaboration with them. Since 2010, the Dixon VETS Housing program has helped over 125 veterans. In 2013, they changed their name to Community Action North Bay (CANB) to better represent their expanded services and areas served. They provide emergency shelter, veteran housing, permanent supportive housing and rental assistance. CANB focuses on specific groups including veterans, seniors and the disabled, who are among the most at risk, but they also help anyone in need. This is the only organization of its kind in Solano County.

Specifically, they offer permanent housing for male Veterans who were previously homeless at the Dixon Habitat for Humanity House. Residents have their own private rooms and share common spaces with fellow occupants. They are self-sufficient and receive supportive services as needed.

This transitional housing initiative allows two years for veterans to move into permanent housing and supports 12 male veterans facing homelessness. To qualify, a veteran must have completed at least one day of active-duty service.
