DIXON, CA (MPG) - Five years after opening its doors, Vanda Orchid Thai Bistro, 1440 Ary Lane, Suite B, has established itself as a local dining option focused on Thai cuisine and community connection.
Owned by Santi and Kanchanet Panyawong, the restaurant reflects the couple’s background and experience growing up in Thailand, as well as their desire to introduce new flavors to the Dixon area.
“We’ve been open for five years now,” said Santi Panyawong.
The decision to open a restaurant was rooted in both personal passion and a sense of opportunity in a smaller city. The owners said Dixon’s communal environment made it an appealing place to start a business.
“We’re from Thailand. I have always loved cooking and feeding Thai food to the people,” said Panyawong. “It’s a great community here, and I wanted to bring something different that people can enjoy.”
Panyawong added that the local response has reinforced their decision.
“It’s a supportive community. I’m very happy to be here,” he said.
The restaurant’s menu draws from traditional Thai dishes while aiming to create a shared dining experience. According to the owners, the goal is less about emphasizing individual recipes and more about bringing people together through food.
“We just try to deliver an experience to people here,” said Panyawong. “We just want to bring people together.”
Family influence also plays a role in the restaurant’s development. Panyawong said his mother operates Pikul Thai Bistro in Fairfield, providing a connection to the broader Thai restaurant community in the region.
Despite challenges, the restaurant
has continued to rely on repeat customers and steady community engagement. The
owners emphasized efficiency and consistency as key priorities in maintaining
their operation. These selections, they said, reflect both familiar and widely enjoyed aspects of Thai cuisine.
Operating a restaurant in a smaller city has presented ongoing challenges, particularly as costs fluctuate. The owners said balancing affordability with consistent quality is a daily consideration.
“One of the biggest challenges is managing rising costs while still keeping our food quality high and prices reasonable for customers,” said Panyawong. “It’s something we think about every day.”
Despite those challenges, the restaurant has continued to rely on repeat customers and steady community engagement. The owners emphasized efficiency and consistency as key priorities in maintaining their operation.
“We just keep our quality high and make sure people keep coming back,” said Panyawong. “We’re more focused on building with the community. We work to cook quickly and efficiently. It’s very important to us.”
Looking ahead, the Panyawongs said they plan to continue strengthening their presence in Dixon while maintaining the approach that has guided the business since it opened.
They also acknowledged the broader network of Thai restaurants in the region, noting that each establishment offers its own variation of the cuisine.
“Every Thai restaurant around here is good, but we’re all a bit different,” said Panyawong.
