DIXON, CA (MPG) - The Lincoln Highway was America’s first transcontinental highway. It connected San Francisco to New York City, and it ran right through Dixon. You can still see route markers for it and Route 40 along First Street, Adams Street and Porter Road.
Dixon United Methodist Church, 209 N. Jefferson St., the historic church by the railroad tracks downtown, is having a fundraising campaign with the theme “Road Trip for Ministry: The Lincoln Highway.” On this virtual trip, participants will explore this famous route, its history, local points of interest, historic destinations, natural wonders and quirky sights. Each dollar donated will get them closer to their Times Square, New York City destination and will support the church’s ongoing community outreach and ministry.
Community members can help on this journey. Have you traveled on the Lincoln Highway? Do you have family stories of the Lincoln Highway? Do you have tidbits of local history to share from the 1920s to ‘40s? Do you have information on the businesses along Adams Street in the 1930s to ‘40s? Do you have pre-1960s maps hiding in a closet that you would be willing to share?
Would you like to take this virtual journey with us? Call the church at 707-678-2191 or email the church at [email protected] to share what information you might have and/or if you would like to receive a Road Trip: Lincoln Highway email update every month or so.
